Cragside Court, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead

Client: Queen El Project Value: £856,000.00

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital [the QE] was opened in 1948 and is located in Sheriff Hill in Gateshead. One of the first created within the UK, Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust was established in 2005 and Cragside Court, an in-patient assessment and challenging behavioural unit, is situated within the grounds of the QE Hospital. It is part of the Older Person’s Directorate.

Our contract was to carry out the total remodeling and refurbishment of the self-contained building including the provision of new heating [including high performance boilers] and lighting systems, the construction of a new plant room and installation of a new gas main; and alterations to the existing drainage below and above ground. The buildings suspended ceilings were replaced and we installed new door-sets throughout. The construction of new toilet areas with ensuite bathrooms and shower rooms completed the major internal works.

We also provided all of the floor finishes, window treatments including blinds, decorated throughout the building and formed new landscaped areas for patient use within the existing courtyard. All of our work required clinical control as we were working within a fully operational hospital environment with staff, visitors and vulnerable patients to consider at all times. The project was completed on time and budget to the total satisfaction of the Foundation Trust.
