Client: Northumbria University Project Value: £1,360,000 Contract Duration: March 2008 – September 2008
This project entailed the complex upgrading and refurbishment of existing facilities within Northumbria University’s Student Union Building
which remained open for use whilst our construction work was carried out. We had also had to be constantly aware of the requirements
of other main contractors on campus as major construction works were being carried out simultaneously, adjacent to our site.
To ensure that the programme of events and the function of the Students Union continued unaffected, temporary works were carried out to allow use of the concert facilities during our contract period. This included the provision of adequate fire escape routes through the site whilst maintaining the security of our working areas. The PFB project team worked very closely with the structural engineers to ensure that refurbishment works, and in particular the construction of the new list shaft, did not affect the integrity or stability of the building during the process. We built up a great rapport with University Estates staff during the project duration as we had to interface with all of the various departments involved as work progressed. Work also included; internal demolition and strip out, creation of new back of house facilities and bar cellar area, new toilet facilities, installation of IT systems and the upgrading of access to bars and concert spaces..
